A TRIBUTE
Bede hailed from Janiuay,
To his family and friends, he was always called Bede. But to the younger ones, he was Manong Bede. Manong is a Filipino prefix that one uses as a sign of respect. To his nieces and nephews, he was Tito Bead (Uncle Bead). Copying Irish, his daughter, Wal-Mart coworkers called him Daddy.
Bede moved to
He liked to collect hats and clothes, especially jackets; he owned at least 25 of them. He was always a snappy dresser who favored beige and brown. Breads and sweets were his addiction. In the hospital, he had a stash of bread which he would eat when the doctor was not looking. Because of his diabetes, he was asked to lay off starch and he would lie to the doctor when asked if he ate bread.
Luena & Bede
AS A HUSBAND
Bede is married to Ret. Police Senior Superintendent Luena Layador. They met in 1966 in
The rest is history. They dated for 8 years and finally married in 1974. They were blessed with their first offspring, Ivy, in 1976. Jett soon followed in 1977. Just when they thought they were through having babies, Irish was born 8 years later.
Bede was a very loving and loyal husband.
AS A FATHER
Daddy was a quiet disciplinarian. A man of few words who when he spoke, we listened. We could ignore Mom all we wanted, but once Daddy opened his mouth, we would stand at attention. At work, when Daddy spoke more than two words to a coworker, they felt honored to be spoken to because his usual answer was a grunt. When we were growing up, he made himself the designated lunch-maker; the usual menu was adobo with eggs, pork chop with hotdog, and the never-ending pancit canton.
Though he was a disciplinarian, he was also flexible enough to allow us to choose our own paths with words of encouragement. He guided us through life and school, from helping us on our difficult math problems to simple stuff, like feeding the dogs and making the perfect pot of rice.
Despite how bad we would be at times, Daddy would show us unconditional love. He was always very supportive and loyal, putting his family first at all times. We are very fortunate and appreciative that he was such a good provider and father to us all our lives. We love him very much and he’s always in our hearts. He’s our number one superhero!
Ely, Flora, Bede
AS A BROTHER
Bede was the brother of Emma Estandarte, Baltazar Layador, Flora Franco, Eliseo Melancio, and Rosemary Nobleza. He was the brother they could rely on, whether he was needed for a simple ride to the store or to be the listening ear in rough times. He also was their mom’s favorite, which caused a little jealousy amongst the siblings. He always received the first dibs on things, like food and toys. This, however, did not affect his personality at all. It actually has a positive effect because it made him the person he was today—very caring, very humble and appreciative—which is why his brothers and sisters could never be too angry with him. In fact, his brother, Bal, ended up asking Bede to join him in Manila, taking him under his wing and guiding him to success.
KIND AND GENTLE
He was respected because of his acts of kindness. He never said no when someone needed help and was always looking for more ways to help out. They called him the “Jack of All Trades” because if it was broken, he would find the economical way to fix it. He was also very fond of animals; he was very patient with them. His second favorite TV channel, after the Filipino Channel, was Animal Planet.
His gentle ways with animals also applied to his garden. He was able to grow a garden of vegetables in the backyard despite the unusual weather in
LOVING AND CARING
Bede’s fondness for animals and gardens never took precedence over the love of his family and friends. He never has anything bad to say about anyone except those kontrabidas (villains) in the soap operas. He accepted the mistakes of his loved ones, but didn’t tolerate stubbornness. Thus, he would set morals and fair rules at home, but didn’t set unfair demands. With his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, he would go out of his way to entertain them. Bede couldn’t help but take joy in their laughter.
Bede had a quiet way about him, but a simple grin or a grunt meant a thousand endearing words. Through the battles with cancer, Bede was a fighter. His love for his friends and family urged him on to be strong, and though the his illness was taking a stronger hold of him, he would not give up the fight without making sure that everyone he loved knew that he still thought of them, loved them, and would forever be there for them. In this world of chaos, God blessed us with this quiet, loving soul that became the calm of all our storms.
"Those we love don’t go away,
They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear."

Prayer for Our Daddy
Lord, please bless our Daddy,
the man who means so much to us,
who is greatly responsible
for who we are and who we are becoming.
Bless him for having the courage
to do what’s necessary to keep us out of trouble,
for making us do the right thing,
for helping us build our character,
even when it makes us angry;
and bless him for pushing us to do our best,
even when he just wants to love us.
Bless our Daddy for being our protector,
for leading us through stormy times to safety,
for making us believe that everything will be all right
and for making it so.
Bless our Daddy for quietly making a living
to provide for those he loves most,
for giving us food, clothing, shelter
and the other material things that really matter,
for unselfishly investing time and money in us
that he could have spent on himself.
Bless our Daddy, Lord,
for saving some energy for fun,
for leading us on adventures
to explore the outer reaches of ourselves,
for making us laugh,
for being our playmate and our friend.
Bless our Daddy, Lord,
for the unconditional love he has shown us,
Bless our Daddy Lord,
for facing this last calvary,
showing us how strong he is,
for fighting til the very end.
Bless him for being our secure foundation, our rock,
for holding on tight to us...until it’s time to let us go.
Lord, bless this man we look up to,
our role model, our hero, the love of our life,
our Daddy.

The special man who guided you
and taught you
and in all your hours of need

would never, ever
want to make you cry
So even in this time
